Purpose of this Section
On February 18, 2016, the MPO Governing Board approved under Resolution #06-16, the establishment of a policy to set as highest priority the advancement of rapid transit corridor projects in Miami-Dade County. As a result of this Resolution, on April 21, 2016, Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan was endorsed by the Board under Resolution #26-16.
The purpose of this section is to support the advancement and implementation of the SMART Plan through analysis, monitoring, updating and engagement of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) in association with our transportation partners. The SMART Plan includes six (6) rapid transit corridors and a bus express network, as shown in the attached map. All these corridors are connected to the Metrorail system that is the backbone of the transportation system in Miami-Dade County.
In order to comply with the MPO Governing Board Resolutions, the MPO is initiating a new process under the purview of the TIP Development Committee. The objective of this effort is to integrate those projects within a half mile to the SMART corridors that can improve transit along these selected corridors. Following is a flowchart of the proposed process.
The MPO has already identified a list of projects within the ½ mile boundaries. The following table shows the number of projects identified by Fiscal Year in the areas of:
- New road construction
- Adding capacity
- Widening lanes
- Rehabilitation
- Traffic improvements
- Bicycle & Pedestrian
- Intermodal facilities
- Port and Airport connectivity
- Landscaping
- Freight improvements, and
- PD&Es, among others
